Project Overview:

Following the adoption of MAP Carbondale, the Town of Carbondale began testing different traffic calming measures on streets around town in 2025. This work will continue in 2026 with test projects on Sopris Avenue, Cowen Drive, and Snowmass Drive.

The purpose of these test projects is to evaluate temporary traffic calming measures that may help improve safety, manage vehicle speeds, and support more comfortable travel for pedestrians, bicyclists, and drivers.

2026 Test Project Locations

Sopris Avenue

Traffic calming measures are planned along several sections of Sopris Avenue. The proposed measures vary by block based on street width, existing parking, nearby intersections, and current street conditions.

Planned test measures include:

  • A temporary raised pedestrian crossing on the west side of the Sopris Avenue and 8th Street intersection.
  • Adjustments to on-street parking between 8th Street and Snowmass Drive.
  • Striping to better define parking areas.
  • Lane shifts that move traffic north and south through selected blocks.
  • Ten-foot travel lanes in several sections.
  • Tightened turning radii at the Sopris Avenue and Snowmass Drive intersection.

No traffic calming measures are planned between 4th Street and 3rd Street, or between 3rd Street and 2nd Street, due to narrower street widths, existing parking, nearby driveways, and current street conditions.

Cowen Drive

A traffic calming test is planned on Cowen Drive from the concrete/asphalt pavement change near the cemetery north to just before the first entrance to the Comfort Inn.

In this section, traffic will be moved back and forth using bulb-outs along the edge of the road combined with center medians. Travel lanes will be reduced to nine feet in each direction through the test area.

Snowmass Drive

A temporary raised crossing is being installed at the crossing near Crystal River Elementary School

Project Purpose

The Traffic Calming Test Project is intended to help the Town better understand how temporary street design changes may affect traffic movement, safety, and comfort for all roadway users.

The 2026 test projects are for information and feedback only. The Town will use the results of these temporary installations and feedback from boards, commissions, and the community to help guide future transportation decisions.

Project Status

The 2026 Traffic Calming Test Projects were presented to the Bicycle, Pedestrian and Trails Commission for information and feedback on June 1, 2026.
